Upcoming year 2012 will be significant in the Chinese calendar, as it represents the ‘Year of the dragon’, and we have seen a number of artifacts which have displayed artworks paying tribute to the mythical animal. One such horological example is the Bovet limited edition dragon timepiece for the Only Watch auction 2011, and the Vertu Signature mobile handset that had gold artwork in the form of a dragon, on the handset’s body. Enlisting itself in this league is the Cornelius & Cie Tourbillon dragon watch, whose artwork is a symbol of the ancient Japanese art of Mokume Gane.
The main chassis of the timepiece is a solid gold structure that has been embalmed with oxidized silver to give it the distinct vintage appeal. This chassis is around 12mm thick and 44mm wide, which includes the dial of the timepiece. It is here that we see the skeletonized formation and the detailed and hand crafted version of the ancient mythical animal, which envelops most of the dial. Also indicating the time, are the blue crafted hands which display the hour and minutes of the day. Reversing the dial, one can see the unique tourbillion which includes a double barrel movement, a debut from the company perspective. It is this very mechanism which gives the timepiece its 120 hours of power reserve before it needs a coiling to function as before. Looking closely, one could even catch a glimpse of the 27 jewels which are a part of this movement, known to have a vibration rate of 21,600 VPH.
