A rare 32-carat yellow diamond estimated to fetch $8M at Christie’s auction

32 carat yellow diamond
One of the world’s most renowned auction houses, Christie’s, is well in the process of auctioning a rare 32.77-carat vivid yellow diamond at Magnificent Jewels sale in New York City on October 18. The company is expecting to fetch around $8 million from the sale of this exquisite diamond. This jewel is ranked as the rarest of gemstones in its class because of its vivid deep yellow color.

The golden yellow shade of this huge pear-shaped stone is roughly the size of a guitar pick. As per Rahul Kadakia, head of jewelry for Christie’s Americas, “The Vivid Yellow literally blazes with color, unlike any yellow diamond I’ve ever seen. In the world of diamonds, a naturally colored stone of this color and size represents a freak occurrence i.e. an extremely rare geological phenomenon.”
Technically, the atomic structure of a diamond is responsible for imparting yellow color to it. A diamond gains its yellow color from nitrogen that replaces carbon atoms in the diamond’s structure. Usually, diamonds contain less nitrogen but there is always a room for exceptions as this rarely found diamond has unusually high level of aggregated nitrogen that renders a saturated, deep golden yellow color to it. The original rough stone form, which the diamond has been cut in, must have had an unusual atomic concentration and that’s why no tailored faceting was required to bring out the color in this diamond.
According to auction house, the stone has the potential to surpass the per carat price of $203,000 achieved for Golden Drop, a pear-shaped 18.49 carat yellow diamond sold in June 1990 at Christie’s auction in London. For all the diamond lovers, Christie’s has prearranged a global preview tour of the diamond earlier to its sale. Here are they.
  • Christie’s London, August 30 and 31
  • Christie’s Geneva, September 12 and 13
  • Christie’s Hong Kong, September 15 and 16
